Privacy

Short version: no cookies and no analytics. If you subscribe, we keep your email address so we can send you the newsletter. You can leave in one click, and ask us to delete it any time.

Who we are

The Crit is made by Ayush Mayank, in India. Questions about your data go to hello@thecrit.world.

Reading the site

  • No cookies.
  • No analytics, no ads, no tracking pixels.
  • No fonts, scripts or images loaded from other companies' servers.

The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel keeps ordinary request logs, such as your IP address, the time and the page you asked for, to run the site and keep it safe. We don't use them to follow anyone.

What we keep when you subscribe

We keep:

  • Your email address. We don't ask for your name or anything else.
  • When you signed up, and when you confirmed. That's our record that you said yes.
  • Your status: waiting for you to confirm, subscribed, or unsubscribed.
  • A one-time confirmation code, for the link in the confirmation email.
  • A random unsubscribe code, so the link in each email works without a login.
  • A send log: which issue went to your address, and when.

We don't record whether you open an email or click a link. That tracking is off.

Why we keep it

  • To send you one email asking you to confirm.
  • To send you the newsletter: one email when a new teardown is out.
  • To know who got which issue, so nobody gets the same one twice.
  • To answer you if you write to us.

That's all. We never sell or share your address, and we don't use it for ads.

We keep it because you asked us to. Pressing Subscribe sends you one confirmation email. You're only subscribed once you click the link in it, and no newsletter goes out before that. You don't have to subscribe to read anything on the site.

Who handles it for us

This is the setup when the newsletter goes live:

  • Turso stores the subscriber list and the send log (our own database).
  • Resend delivers the emails, and does nothing else. Each time we send, it gets your address and the email. It keeps a log of each sent email for 30 days. If an email bounces or is marked as spam, Resend may keep the address on its block list so it isn't sent to again.
  • Vercel hosts the site and runs the small app behind the Subscribe form.

All three are US companies, so your address may be stored or handled outside your country. Resend handles it under its data processing agreement with its customers.

How long we keep it

If you never click the confirmation link, we delete your address and everything with it after 7 days.

Once you're subscribed, we keep it as long as you stay subscribed. When you unsubscribe, the emails stop at once, and we delete your address, your sign-up record and your send log from our database within 30 days. Resend's log of the emails it sent expires after 30 days.

Your rights

  • See it. Ask what we hold about you, and who handles it.
  • Correct it. Fix a wrong address.
  • Delete it. Ask, and we delete everything in our database. Resend's log of sent emails expires after 30 days.
  • Leave in one click. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
  • Change your mind any time. Unsubscribing is as easy as signing up.

Write to hello@thecrit.world. We answer within a month. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the data protection authority where you live. In India, that's the Data Protection Board of India.
